Emigration to America
From 1888 onward (Limbach), many people emigrated to America because of economic problems in our region. Pennsylvania as well as Detroit, Canada and South America were destinations for the emigrants. Emigration was at its peak around 1900, by 1903 Kukmirn had lost 10% of all inhabitants. In 1930 about 950 men and women from Kukmirn lived in America.
Many of those emigrants returned and became respected citi-zens in their home country. Richard Zotter, born 1930 in Avellanada, South America, was mayor of Kukmirn from 1971 to 1986. Reinhold Fiedler, who lived in Montreal from 1960 to 1967, has been mayor from 1986 on.
